Post, abutment, crown: what an implant actually is
A dental implant is built in three pieces. A titanium post takes the place of the tooth root and fuses to the jawbone over a period of months. An abutment attaches to the top of the post, and a crown, shaped and colored to match the teeth around it, attaches to the abutment. The result is a replacement tooth that's anchored the way a natural one is, not glued or clipped in.

A single implant vs. implant-supported dentures
A missing tooth, a loose or uncomfortable denture, or a tooth that can't be saved are the usual reasons someone starts asking about implants. A single missing tooth is generally replaced with one implant and one crown. A fuller denture that shifts or clicks when you talk or eat can instead be anchored to several implants, so it stays in place the way a natural bite does.
