Exams, x-rays and cleanings for every age at 1000 Wigwam Parkway, with home care advice you'll actually use between visits.

Chapter 01

What your first exam covers

A first visit at Southridge Dental starts with an exam from Dr. Christopher Martinez. He checks your teeth, gums and bite, and looks for anything that needs attention before it becomes a bigger problem. Digital x-rays fill in what the eye can't see on its own: decay starting between teeth, bone level around the roots, and anything developing under the gumline.

After the exam, a cleaning removes the plaque and tartar that brushing at home can't reach, especially along the gumline and between teeth. Registered dental hygienist Amy has worked in dentistry for thirty years and has been a hygienist for more than twenty of them, so a cleaning here tends to be unhurried and thorough rather than rushed through in fifteen minutes.

Why six months, and what gets missed in between

Two visits a year isn't an arbitrary number. Plaque hardens into tartar within a matter of weeks, and tartar can't be brushed away at home, only scaled off with the right instruments. A six-month rhythm catches a small cavity while it's still small, and catches early gum inflammation while it's still reversible with a good cleaning rather than a deeper procedure.

Skip a visit or two and the gap is usually where a small problem grows quietly: a spot on an x-ray that would have been a simple filling becomes a root canal, or early gum inflammation becomes the kind of bone loss around a tooth that can't be undone. None of that shows up as pain right away, which is exactly why the six-month exam is the point of catching it, not the appointment that gets skipped because nothing hurts yet.

Chapter 03

Home care you'll actually be told

Between visits, the advice at Southridge Dental is specific rather than generic. Amy will usually point patients toward an electric brush like SoniCare over a manual one, and toward a fluoride toothpaste like Crest, because the combination does more of the daily work for you. Two minutes, twice a day, covering the gumline and not just the chewing surfaces, does more for your next cleaning than any amount of mouthwash.

Flossing is the part almost everyone skips, and the part that matters most between teeth, where a brush can't reach at all. If scheduling is the obstacle, Jane at the front desk has run appointments here since 2009 and is used to working around Henderson work schedules, so ask about early options: the office opens at 7:30 AM Monday through Thursday.
